One of the things that has always bugged me—ever since my math olympiad days—is the mentality of outright refusing to touch a specific topic.

Take me as an example. I hated combinatorics so much that during my undergraduate olympiad, I won the national level by solving 8 out of 10 problems—the remaining two were, predictably, combinatorics. I even remember the head jury telling me to "git gud" at it, lol.

But this hatred for combinatorics wasn't the main thing blocking my progress. A much bigger roadblock was my sheer stubbornness to get my hands dirty with computations and concrete examples.

During my undergrad years, my approach was all about the concepts: learn the definitions, memorize the lemmas, prove the theorems, and repeat. I was perfectly happy just living in pure theory, completely avoiding the actual work of testing those ideas on examples. This is exactly why I stayed so far away from analysis in my early days. Looking back, it's pretty funny, considering I am heavily leaning into analysis nowadays!

Back then, I wouldn't even dare to read a real analysis problem. I would look at things like differentiability, integrability, and continuity and wonder what they were actually used for in practice. Just looking at how heavy the calculations were made me deeply uncomfortable.

To be fair, I still can't tell you the exact reason I pivoted to analysis for my Master's. For the past year, it felt like my body was actively rejecting the subject, yet I kept pushing forward—all because of a single problem that started this whole change.

The turning point was during the 2023 IMC in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria. I ran into a problem that kept me completely stuck for three hours. (Pardon the "skill issue" of spending that much time on a single problem). But in those three hours, I finally made peace with my discomfort. It was actually the only problem I managed to solve that day, but the thought process required to crack it made me realize that I needed to stop running from the math that scared me.

IMC 2023, Problem 7
Let \(V\) be the set of all continuous functions \(f:[0,1]\to\mathbb{R}\), differentiable on \((0,1)\), with the property that \(f(0)=0\) and \(f(1)=1\). Determine all \(\alpha\in\mathbb{R}\) such that for every \(f\in V\), there exists some \(\xi\in(0,1)\) such that \(f(\xi)+\alpha=f'(\xi).\)

I was completely stuck on this problem until I forced myself to take a radical approach. Instead of just playing with the given conditions abstractly, I tried to directly solve the differential equation \(f(x)+\alpha=f'(x)\). Getting my hands dirty like that gave me a simple half-page proof. When I finally dropped the "abstract nonsense" that I was so comfortable with, the insight just clicked.

It still surprises me how much I've improved after just a year of rigorous (and occasionally traumatic) training. I openly admit that I was terrible at handling analytic inequalities, but after spending a lot of time figuring out why they actually work, I can now genuinely appreciate basic inequalities like:

1. The Cauchy-Schwarz Inequality
$$ \left| \int fg \right| \leq \left( \int f^2 \right)^{\frac{1}{2}} \left( \int g^2 \right)^{\frac{1}{2}} $$

2. Young's Inequality
$$ ab \leq \frac{a^p}{p} + \frac{b^q}{q} $$

3. Hölder's Inequality
$$ \int |fg| \leq \left( \int |f|^p \right)^{\frac{1}{p}} \left( \int |g|^q \right)^{\frac{1}{q}} $$

Back in my early days, I couldn't understand why anyone would put an arbitrary \(\varepsilon>0\) into Young's inequality. But now? I literally cannot unsee Young's inequality with \(\varepsilon\) whenever I look at a bounding problem involving products:

\[\int |fg| \leq \frac{\varepsilon}{2} \int f^2 + \frac{1}{2\varepsilon} \int g^2\]

That \(\varepsilon\) isn't meant to be scary at all! It acts as a placeholder so you can easily absorb terms into one another. One of the best times to use Young's inequality is when finding bounds for the solution to an elliptic PDE, like:

\[-\operatorname{div}(A\nabla u) = 0\]

By multiplying by a test function that includes a smooth cutoff \(\eta\) and applying Young's inequality with \(\varepsilon\), we can absorb the gradient terms to get the Caccioppoli inequality:

\[\int_{\Omega} \eta^2 |\nabla u|^2 \, dx \leq C \int_{\Omega} |\nabla \eta|^2 |u|^2 \, dx\]

This inequality is our way of controlling the gradient (the derivative) using just the integral of the solution itself. From there, we can prove even more, to the point of showing that the weak solution \(u\) is actually a smooth, nice function!

The beauty of the very things that once made me so uncomfortable suddenly made perfect sense.

Perhaps the only thing that ever truly held me back was my own rigid mindset. If I had kept hating inequalities, I never would have survived, let alone enjoyed, my first year in Italy. If I had just stuck to abstract algebraic reasoning, I would never have understood why the Poincaré inequality is so useful. If I only stayed in my comfort zone, I would never let myself appreciate anything new.

To the readers: I really urge you to try to work on things that make you uncomfortable. Staying stuck in a familiar bubble doesn't do you any good in the long run.

I have no idea if, in ten years, I'll still be working on the exact same math I like today. But I can say for sure that I am willing to adapt—not just in math, but in life overall.

Adapt and overcome.

TL;DR: I’ve spent years feeling like a fraud in mathematics, attributing my successes to luck or “easy” problems. But after reflecting on my rigorous Master’s at UNIPD, I realized the truth: I’m not a genius, I’m just a relentless learner. The exams didn’t get easier—I just got stronger.

It’s not your life getting easier, it’s just you getting better.

Yes. This thought came to me after I realized I was looking at everything incorrectly.

I will confess: I actually never feel like I am good enough, especially in doing mathematics—and in being human.

About being human? That’s a topic for another day. Let’s focus on mathematics.

In doing mathematics? Dude, I never got an award in my country’s national olympiad (OSN) for years. NOT UNTIL I attended uni (It’s ONMIPA), where… I felt I was fighting no one because those who won the actual OSN had already flown away from Indonesia.

I never invested hours just to make a super elegant solution for a particular problem in math olympiads. I felt like… what I did was merely basic stuff. I never had ingenious thoughts nor made breakthroughs by any means.

I… feel like a fraud. It seems like I got all my achievements just because no one else was there. I remember the moment I won the absolute winner award at ONMIPA; I thought the problems I did were all “obvious”—problems that I thought everyone should be able to solve, because I always viewed myself as an average Joe.

The Losers Bracket

Why did I feel this way? Looking at my track record, I came from the middle of nowhere. Everyone only knew my hometown due to the “Sampit Conflict.” I might be somewhat gifted, but I grew up as someone who was put in the 2nd position at best.

As I said earlier, I got interested in math olympiads, but I sucked for years. Those who won? They went to universities abroad and supposedly lived happily ever after. Those who lost? They went to local universities, like me, and competed in the “losers bracket.”

I am happy with what I achieved, but for as long as I have lived, I never felt like I was winning as the “best of the best.” These circumstances made me feel like a fraud.

My self-esteem got so low to the point that I always thought the exams I passed and aced were only because the examiner deliberately made them easy. I always thought of this in my life, but then I got slapped by reality when I arrived at UNIPD.

Looking Back

I cannot lie; I am truly grateful that at the moment this article is being written, I have passed all my exams with very compelling grades. However, I initially felt that I achieved these grades merely because I could solve the exams without thinking too much.

Yes. I thought the exam problems I solved were the “obvious” ones again. Until I realized…

I STRUGGLED A LOT when I was attending the lectures. Especially the first 10 lectures of each class.

In Functions Theory, I was not fluent with measure theory, Lebesgue integration, space of smooth functions with compact support, integration in \(\mathbb{R}^n\), and many more. But... at the end of the semester, I achieved 30/30 cum laude.

In Stochastic Analysis, I didn't understand the slightest bit of what the professor was explaining when the first lecture happened. I even admitted to the professor after class that I needed more references just to keep up. At the end of the semester, I passed the written test with 30/30. Hopefully, after the oral test, it can go even higher. (update 20260325: Thankfully, I passed with 30/30 cum laude)

In Functional Analysis, I felt lucky I did plenty of work in point-set topology and I self-studied the topic a lot before coming to UNIPD. I thought the class was a breeze for everyone because I felt that way. Yes, I got 30/30 cum laude. However... the grade distribution of my class was quite terrible.

For all of these exams, I felt that they were “easy” and I thought these grades were a giveaway.

Until I remembered my current campus is an elite one. I am attending a rigorous program where, in the interview, they asked:

“This program is tough, will you be able to do it?”

“Yes. That is the reason I applied for this program.”

I thought my life was easy, until I remembered all my struggle, all my pain. There are plenty of thorns I have walked across, plenty of terrains I have gone through, plenty of hells I have visited.

Gifted as a Learner

I realized, my life is not easy at all. After long contemplation, I realized: actually, I am not gifted as a genius, but I am gifted as a learner.

Did I cry? A lot. Did I struggle? A lot. Did I lose to them? Almost never.

I am sorry to all my friends. Now I have realized that I am indeed not “smart,” but I can learn to be.

Why did my exams suddenly become easy? Because I studied like crazy and actually… I became crazier each day.

Why did I win my awards? Because I had accumulated plenty of tools that made the problems looked like a joke.

Why do you think that I live without stress? Because this stress is an everyday thing to me. Actually, this is one of the reasons my academic life feels really chill when I look back. I have adapted to the point where academic stress has virtually zero effect on me.

Yes, I am scared. Yes, I had the thought I would disappoint everyone. Yes, I don’t need to be perfect. However, I can learn as hard as I can to make anything happen.

Actually, I applied to my current program as a joke since I thought of myself as a fraud who would not pass. Well… things happen, and in Fall 2026 I will make my first touchdown in Paris—one of the toughest places to do mathematics!

Final Thoughts

After these long thoughts, I actually have one more exam: Differential Geometry. How about it? Please wait for at least three weeks since I am currently preparing for it. However… I feel no issues so far (this will be updated) because I did not realize that I am unconsciously adapting to this topic as well. (update 20260325: Thankfully, I passed with 30/30. I messed my notations during the exam which cause me fail on getting the last 31/30, but at least I passed gracefully.)

For those who think their life is getting easier, I would like to remind you to look back. Your life is hard. My life is hard.

It is not your life getting easier, it is you getting better.

A personal rant on the isolation of academic pursuit and the price of ambition. An honest reflection of a big dream: perjuangan S2 di UNIPD, kesepian di tengah prestasi, dan realita ‘berproses’ sendirian di usia 20an.

Personal Rant: The Cost of Dreaming Big

Dear me, in a few years to come.

Personal rant seputar hidup saya yang ternyata gak mudah-mudah amat, tapi saya emang gila aja makanya bisa lewat semua cobaan.

The cost of dreaming big, ya.

Indeed, I excel at being by myself, yet I hate it.

Konsekuensi Pilihan Hidup

Mungkin, saya sebenarnya mendapatkan kebebasan?

Salah satu alasan dulu belajar keras ya biar saya gak sendirian, jadi “keren” gitu biar ada momongan, selayaknya saya S1 kemarin sewaktu ada pacar. Cuma setelah saya jadi jauh lebih baik dari saya lima tahun lalu malah balik lagi menyendiri kaya gini.

Sorry to brag, sekali ini aja mungkin.

Sekalipun gitu masih aja dibilang “kita sekarang masih berproses,” blablabla.

Buat yang bilang “umur 20an buat berproses, gak usah mikir yang lain-lain dulu,”

YA EMANG SAYA BERPROSES TIAP HARI DAN HARUS SELALU BEGITU, TAPI MASA IYA SAYA GAK BOLEH BERPIKIR SEPERTI ITU? MASA IYA SAYA MESTI BERPROSES SENDIRI TERUS?!

What do I have now? Resilience.

Bapak saya wafat waktu S1, saya masih kuliah besoknya. Saya diputusin setelah hubungan 4 tahun tepat sebelum berangkat buat S2, saya masih waras sekolahnya.

Back again, is asking to be loved too much for me?

Most probability theory students know that when we work on partitions on the interval \([0,T]\), the Wiener process has unbounded absolute variation and finite quadratic variation given by \(T\). Now, we shall make a simple generalization which gave an unsurprising result of \(0\) for the \(n\)-th variation when \(n \ge 3\)!

This exercise comes from my final exam on my Bachelor's course in Stochastic Calculus. Simply speaking, this was an elective course and one of the hardest class available in my school, that is Gadjah Mada University. The simple reason I wrote this article right now since I'm currently taking another similar course in the University of Padova, that is, Stochastic Analysis. As expected, the class is hard, lol. Another reason for that is I was wondering if my argument that I made during the exam was correct (sorry, I'm bad in probability stuffs).

Last week, we discussed the first two variations in the Stochastic Analysis class, and I suddenly remembered that I had done the same thing before. So yeah, as I haven't tried to update anything on my page lately, let's just try to solve this simple problem. Thank you the internet for providing me such a great identity that I can abuse in the future! Let us cook now!

The Problem

Let \(W(t)\) be a standard Wiener process. Compute
$$
\lim_{\|P\|\to 0} \sum_{k=0}^{m-1} (W(t_{k+1}) - W(t_k))^n,
$$
for \(n \ge 3\).

Solution

We shall assume that the partition \(P\) is taken over an interval \([0,T]\). For all such partition \(P\), given as
$$P = \{0=t_0 < t_1 < t_2< \ldots<t_m = T\},$$
define
$$S_P^n := \sum_{k=0}^{m-1}(W(t_{k+1})-W(t_k))^n.$$
We shall prove \(S_P^n \xrightarrow{L^2} 0\), that is
$$\text{E}[(S^n_P-0)^2] \to 0$$
as \(\|P\|\to 0\).

Since \(\text{E}[(S^n_P)^2] = \text{Var}(S^n_P) + \text{E}[S^n_P]^2\), it is sufficient to prove \(\text{Var}(S^n_P)\to 0\) and \(\text{E}[S^n_P]^2\to 0\) as \(\|P\|\to 0\).

For a random variable \(X\sim N(0,\sigma^2)\), one can show that
$$
\text{E}[X^n] = \begin{cases}
    0&, \ \text{\(n\) odd}\\
    (n-1)!!\cdot\sigma^n&, \ \text{\(n\) even}
\end{cases}
$$
by utilizing the Taylor expansion of the Moment Generating Function for X to get the desired result.

By the independent increment property of the standard Wiener process, we have
$$\text{Var}(S^n_P) = \sum_{k=0}^{m-1}\text{Var}((W(t_{k+1})-W(t_k))^n)$$
and by the linearity of expectations
$$\text{E}[S^n_P] = \sum_{k=0}^{m-1}\text{E}[(W(t_{k+1})-W(t_k))^n].$$
For any \(k\in\{0,1,2,\ldots,m-1\}\) we have \(W(t_{k+1})-W(t_k)\sim N(0,t_{k+1}-t_k)\). Therefore,
$$
\text{E}[(W(t_{k+1})-W(t_k))^n] = \begin{cases}
    0&, \ \text{\(n\) odd}\\
    (n-1)!!\cdot(t_{k+1}-t_k)^{\frac{n}{2}}&, \ \text{\(n\) even}\end{cases}
$$
and
$$
\text{E}[(W(t_{k+1})-W(t_k))^{2n}] =
    (2n-1)!!\cdot(t_{k+1}-t_k)^n.
$$
We shall assume \(n\) is even, as the case of \(n\) odd is simpler. From these results, we also have
$$
\begin{aligned}
    \text{Var}((W(t_{k+1})-W(t_k))^n) &= \text{E}[(W(t_{k+1})-W(t_k))^{2n}] - \text{E}[(W(t_{k+1})-W(t_k))^n]^2\\
    &=[(2n-1)!!-((n-1)!!)^2]\cdot(t_{k+1}-t_k)^n.
\end{aligned}
$$
    As we don't need the exact value of \((2n-1)!!\) and \((n-1)!!\) in this computation, we write \(A = (n-1)!!\) and \(B = (2n-1)!!-((n-1)!!)^2\). Since, \(\|P\|=\max_{1\le k\le m-1} (t_{k+1}-t_k)\),
$$
0=t_0 < t_1 < t_2 < \ldots < t_m=T,
$$
    and \(A\), \(B > 0\) (by the fact \(n \ge 3\)), we have
$$
0\le\text{E}[S^n_P] = A\sum_{k=0}^{m-1}(t_{k+1}-t_k)^{\frac{n}{2}} \le A\cdot \|P\|^{\frac{n-2}{2}}\sum_{k=0}^{m-1}(t_{k+1}-t_k)=A\cdot\|P\|^{\frac{n-2}{2}}\cdot T
$$
    and
$$
\begin{aligned}
    0\le\text{Var}(S^n_P) = B\sum_{k=0}^{m-1}(t_{k+1}-t_k)^n \le B\|P\|^{n-1}\sum_{k=0}^{m-1}(t_{k+1}-t_k)=B\cdot\|P\|^{n-1}\cdot T.
\end{aligned}
$$
    Taking \(\|P\|\to 0\) implies \(\text{E}[S^n_P] = \text{Var}(S_P^n) = 0\) by the Squeeze Theorem. Hence
$$
\lim_{\|P\|\to 0}\text{E}[(S^n_P)^2] = 0 + 0 = 0.
$$
Therefore, we have proved \(S_P^n \xrightarrow{L^2} 0\) and so
$$
\lim_{\|P\|\to 0}\sum_{k=0}^{m-1}(W(t_{k+1})-W(t_k))^n = 0
$$
in \(L^2\) which also implies the limit becomes \(0\) in Probability.

Slight remark

A slight modification of this argument can be used to prove \(S_P^2\xrightarrow{L^2}T\), that is, by proving \(\lim_{\|P\|\to 0}\mathrm{E}[(S_P^2-T)^2] = 0\).

Syukur pandemi datang buat ngebantu aku ngilang.

November 2019, with Mrs. Morta in front of Auditorium FMIPA UGM at LMNAS 29

“Tunggu dulu, SNMPTN gimana? Kan kamu gak keterima gegara ga baca peluang. Matematika aja udah nolak apalagi Aktuaria dong?” F**k it, man.

Cukup ideal. Ngerangkum? Aku ngebaca semua buku paket materi dari kelas 10 sampai kelas 12, habis selesai langsung hantam latihan sekiranya 10 sampe 20 soal. Pokoknya efisien. Ya… lengket sih. Sepanjang waktu itu aku cuma belajar sekiranya 1 sampai 2 jam sehari aja, porsi orang biasa. H-7 SNMPTN aku gugup dan enggak belajar lagi.

“Hiya hiya hiya ditolak, mampus lo bocil idealis,” ucap aku ke aku. Reality hits hard.

Wah aku kepikiran lagi, buat apa aku buat judulnya Dari Sampit ke Gadjah Mada, ya? Apa hubungannya dengan bacaan ini? IDK I want to make some inspirational words to others in Sampit but instead I’m making keluh resah part 2. Anggap aja clickbait ya.

Well… beberapa hari setelah ambil rapor mungkin mau nulis pengalaman singkat sebagai siswa SMA yang agak “gagal”.
Bukan.
Sampe-sampe aku gak nyadar kalo malah sekarang udah lulus.

Sebelum lanjut, kalian ngira aku ambis? Ambis?

Benar, tanggal 14 Juni pengumuman SBMPTN.

Bahkan waktu baru masuk SMA aja udah berani bilang kalo mau masuk FK UGM, walaupun ujung-ujungnya malah lanjut belajar matematika lagi di UGM.

Intinya jangan ngaco aja dah.

Bagian penutup, sebenarnya aku candu main kok.

Thanks for reading.
